This weekend, Mom and I decided to make a quick trip to Charleston for the day. Let me tell you… it was so good to escape from school work and the beach for a little while. Just getting out of town for a day is really nice and I highly recommend it!
It was a little rainy and dreary but, we came prepared with our warm clothes and umbrellas.
Of course, I always have my go to’s…. Urban. Which I have to say, H&M totally had better trends this time around than Urban Outfitters. Hate to say it but, I’m going to H&M first next time as well… better prices and cuter clothes.
…but then this happened… a whole display of quirky cards and I was back on Urban’s side.
Of course, we had to stop in Anthro (even though we have one in Myrtle Beach) but look how fabulous their new display was! I am determined to find as many colorful, thick books as I can and destroy them in the name of art. I love this so much!
We did get some amazing finds at J. Crew, too. Turns out, they are in a total Paris in the Springtime trend right now. All the ‘Cest la Vie’ shirts were perfect for our upcoming trip to Pari’ this August.
Also.. Mom knocked over a jewelry display (on accident) of their newest, overpriced springtime jewelry. It was so loud and everyone looked right as us! It was really funny/awesome. A woman ran up to us saying that it was fine and don’t worry about it as I casually shuffled a fallen jewel under the table without her noticing. I even eased dropped on the clerk earlier talking to another clerk how exciting their new jewelry collection was this year. Hahaha- Sorry, J.Crew. We’ll behave better next time! haha PS. I really wish I had gotten a picture of this.
The next thing we did wasn’t on very good behavior either.
Our lunch spot in Charleston is the Kickin’ Chicken on King. I am a sucker for that original Kickin Chicken sandwich so we always go. It was packed on Saturday, I guess all the rain had the usual street walkers inside to watch any kind of sport on their bar tvs. Well, Mom and I found the absolute best table and I’m going to make sure we get this every time from now on!
Yes. This was the front door seat where we could people watch during our entire lunch. The only problem was… street people could totally see me. Especially when I took their picture…
What was even better was that the menu was right under our table so people HAD to come look at our table if they wanted to see the menu. We had other people in the bar telling us when people were coming so we could get a good shot LOL. Such bad behavior but such great food!
Um… I hope you watched the Oscars last night! I am extra sleepy today because we watched the whole thing… it went to midnight! I got ready early with my Mr. Right paperdoll postcards dressed up for the occasion. My mom likes to get me little gifts like these because she makes fun of my single-ness.
But after a long day of studying, I got to go to Erin’s house for the cutest little gal party for the Oscars.
It was dark and I apologize for my phone pictures but look how precious it was! We had popcorn surprise- bags of popcorn with different kinds of candy to put in them. The glasses were the cutest with little bow ties on them!
We played Oscar Bingo and filled out our ballot forms. Erin TOTALLY won with 14 right. We should have played for money!
She even had baby champagnes for us with little straws. Turns out though, don’t stick a straw in a mini champagne bottle! It overflows like when someone pops your top of your beer with the bottom of theirs.. not saying I know what happens when people do that…. lol.
I really want to start getting more into beauty and style in 2014 on the blog. Hopefully, some tutorials will be coming your way soon but for now, I wanted to show you some of my favorite products I use everyday!
First off, I have my own little beauty station when I get ready. My college friends used to make fun of my sitting and getting ready like a lady in the 50′s but you know, it’s just calming and I love having that lit mirror instead of a bathroom mirror. Try it!
Here are my favorites I start out with:
Okay, I just got on the nice foundation train this year. I am usually a drugstore make up girl when it comes to foundation. In the summer, I don’t even wear it and opt for a mineral powder. But in the winter, I’ve usually just looked at make up, picked a shade that looked about right and then wore it regardless. No. I can see now that I have a makeup that is my color (which is pale haha) that it works SO much better.
I start with the Pore Professional to smooth out my nose and under eyes. Then the CC cream to even out my skin tone. I should have taken the cap off but it has both green and pink clay pigments that smooth out the complexion. Green is for taking out the redness and pink brightens the face. Then the foundation is really cool. Instead of having to drip some on your hand and get all messy, Tarte has created a little mesh center that you just dip your brush into. So much better than liquid foundation all over your hand!
Next is contouring:
Again, on the Tarte bandwagon. I used to have a separate bronzer and a separate blush but I love having them combined! Being a fair skinned girl, we need our bronzer or we look dead. I’ll show you how I contour in another post but I really love Tarte’s duo. A brush is almost more important than the product and I swear by Mac brushes. Pay the extra money, keep them clean and they’ll last a long time.
Eyes are next…
Now, of course I use shadow but that is more fun and I change it up Everyday. Why keep the same color when you have so many to choose from?? With my other eye make up, I swear by these products above.
Stay, Don’t Stray is an eye shadow primer. Again, being fair, I have a lot of veins you can see on my lids. This covers them as well as make my eye shadow stick.
I’ve tried MANY eye liners. Few times I didn’t wear liner and people asked if I was sick. not a good thing. So I have stuck to a strong black liner ever since. Many wear off during the day and pencil liners smudge too much for all day wear (unless I’m going for that look) . I stick to a liquid liner and surprisingly, Victoria’s Secret is the best I’ve used.
Mascara is also a fun thing to change up. Last year, I was really into curved brushes. I think my eye shape likes the curve more. Even though I poke my eye sometimes, I really like this Too Faced brand. It’s not curved but it stays on all day and when you wash your face, it falls off in particles and not smears down your face. I hate having to scrub off mascara at night so this is a perfect fix. No smearing!
I’m a lip balm freak so eos is great! I love lipsticks but if I’m not wearing them, I’ve got balm on. It’s also a before bed ritual for me. Our pouts need a little more protection in the wintertime, too.
So I know this was a little different of a post from me but it gives you a little insight on products I like. I would LOVE to find out a make up product that you swear by. Us gals gotta help each other out!
Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see ya Monday!
Today, I want to show you how you can recycle an old candle glass jar. If you’re like me, you buy a nice candle, are obsessed with the scent so burn it all the time and by the time you go to light it again, it’s done. Well, I didn’t want to just throw it away so these little jars are nice for all kinds of things.
First, stick your jar in the freezer for about 30 minutes. That way, the wax will become brittle and come out easy.
Get a knife and carefully, poke holes in it and the wax will loosen and fall out.
Now, it’s very waxy so we’ll need to clean it out. I know their are many ways to clean this out but I just alternated hot water and cold water to get it out. I finished it with a little spritz of Windex and that got it all.
Now that it’s clean, you can use it as is OR you can decorate it. I just used black paint and nail polish to put polka dot designs on this one.
And there you have it, your very own recycled candle jar! Enjoy!
Lately, I’ve been sketching a lot for school and playing with mediums and fonts. I’ve learned a few things and a few tricks to have fabulous handwriting. After playing, I realize that I like an imperfect, playful style of calligraphy. Ok now, so I have NOT taken a calligraphy class but I have been reading blogs and practicing lines I like. It’s all just for fun but I’ve figured out a few things I want to share wtih you.
Buy a few pens and try them out. You’ll find out which ones you prefer….
The brush tip is very much like a paint brush but it doesn’t come apart. You can easily push harder to get a thicker stroke. The calligraphy pen has an angled tip and ink flows freely from it. This takes a little patience to say the least.
Another tip for finding your style of penmanship is by trial and error. You can be very conscious of straight lines and same size lettering OR you can give it more of a personality by throwing out all the rules.
It’s been really fun figuring out the lettering and how to write differently than we’re used to. We all have the alphabet memorized the way we write. However, calligraphy or any other kind of style forces us to get out of our comfort zone. I would tell you to figure out your letters and see what you like but I have also provided this practice sheet to trace.
DOWNLOAD: Fake Calligraphy Practice
Basically, with this, you want your thicker parts of the letter to be the strokes going down. So if you’re using a brush tip, press a little harder on the down strokes and light it up on the up strokes. It will give your writing more definition. Using a thin tip? Go back through your words with an extra down stroke of color to thicken it up.
Try these few fun lines below with your new skill set and see how you do:
i love you more than tacos
you are my person
i can & i will
Again, just have fun with it. The more you practice, the more you can wow your friends with cool lettering on cards, invitations or even present tags.
